Wagrain in the region of Salzburg
Wagrain - and you feel alive
Wagrain is situated on an altitude of 850 metres and has got approximately 3100 inhabitants.
The village is located 70 km in the south of Salzburg. It was mentioned the first time in a official document at the year 1300.
A special date in the history of Wagrain is the 19th of march 1927, on which a huge fire destroyed many houses in the centre of the village.
Famous persons like the austrian author Karl Heinrich Waggerl and Joseph Mohr, lyric poet of the world famous Christmas song "Silent night, holy night" spent their lives in Wagrain.
The rise of Wagrain from the small mountain farmers village to a modern tourism centre began in the 1950´s with the installation of the first cable cars. Due to permanent extensions and modernization of the infrastructure, the tourism in Wagrain developed to the main economy.
