His poem became the most known and popular christmas song of the world.
The poet and pastor lived in Wagrain and was very engaged to help especially the poor part of the population in our village.

This song from Wagrain touches almost everybody in the whole world. It is the simplicity and the pure beauty which make it to the most atmospheric song of christmas. The lyrics of this early world hit where composed by Joseph Mohr as poem. Many years of his life he lived in Wagrain and worked here as pastor.

Joseph Mohr was born in 1792 in Salzburg in poor relatives.
He was ordained a priest in 1815. In 1816 he wrote the poem "Silent night, holy night". Two years later Mohr and his good friend Franz Xaver Gruber set the poem to music. The Christmas Mass in Oberndorf near Salzburg was the premiere of this charming song from Austria.

In the present the Joseph Mohr school and the yearly, christmassy rememberance singings at his tomb recall him.
