Our hiking tips

Edelweißalm trail

Edelweißalm

A moderately difficult tour that starts at the valley station of the Rote 8er cable car. From the Appartments Schattauer, it takes about 1 hour on foot to the start of the tour, or you can take the hiking shuttle that stops right at our front door.

Trail no. 60 will then lead you uphill to the Edelweißalm – a rustic alpine lodge set on an idyllic plateau with fantastic views of the Salzburg mountains. The way back follows the Lärchenwaldweg trail (No. 61) to Wagrain.

Lackenkapelle trail

Chapel

This wonderful hiking tour takes you through meadows and woods to the Lackenkapelle chapel and back to Wagrain in about 2.5 hours. In either direction, it covers a difference in altitude of about 500 metres.

But it is definitely worth it – as you make your way up to an altitude of 1,318 m, you will be rewarded with fantastic views of the Lackenkapelle, a small wooden chapel. The perfect circular trail for the whole family!

Sonntagskogel trail

Sonntagskogel

In approximately 3 hours, this difficult route will take you from the valley station of the Grafenbergbahn cable car to the Sonntagskogel along trail no. 713, covering a distance of 6.9 km with a difference in altitude of 1,036 metres. On the way there, you can stop at the Höllenstein mountain inn or at the Hachaualm lodge. Alternatively, you can also take the Grafenberg cable car, which takes you to an altitude of 1,700 m. From there it's "only" an hour on foot to the summit, where you will be rewarded with panoramic views over the Großglockner, Hochkönig, Dachstein and Gosaukamm mountains.

Where wanderlust meets insider knowledge

Did you know that Wagrain-Kleinarl is a member of the Austrian Wanderdörfer (hiking villages)? To qualify, each member village must meet strict ecological criteria. The villages must also preserve their traditional character, which is definitely the case in Wagrain, with its idyllic town square centred on a large linden tree. For you, Wagrain's membership offers the added benefit of a wide range of guided hikes. At least twice a week you have the opportunity to discover the Salzburg mountains with a trained hiking guide. We will be happy to provide you with further information on the latest hiking activities on offer!

The local cable cars make it possible to comfortably shorten the hikes, which makes this option particularly attractive for families with children. In Wagrain, the Grafenbergbahn and the Flying Mozart mountain cable cars will take you to higher-lying hiking destinations such as Wagrainis Grafenberg. Moreover, you can also use the cable cars to transport your mountain bike. This is particularly useful if you are looking for an adrenaline kick at the Wagrain Bikepark. An additional 22 cable cars across the Ski amadé hiking region will transport you to lofty heights and bring you comfortably closer to the summits.

Hiking shuttle

Hiking shuttle

You can start many of your hikes directly from our front door. However, in case you are tempted to venture out into the Pongau region of Salzburg, the local hiking shuttle will take you to the starting point of your hike and back again to Wagrain. It departs directly from the centre of Wagrain and takes you to Altenmarkt-Zauchensee, Radstadt, Eben, Filzmoos, Flachau, Obertauern, St Johann or the Grossarltal for only €1.00 if you show your guest card.

Alpine inns & lodges

Alpine inns & lodges

There's one thing that every hike should include – namely a stop at a rustic alpine lodge. And there are many of those to choose from in Wagrain and the Salzburger Sportwelt, for example the Berghofalm, Almstadl, Alpengasthof Koglalm, Wagrainer Haus, Kühberg Alm, Krapfenalm, Wagrainer Alm, Jausenstation Grub, Edelweissalm, and many others.

While enjoying the magnificent view, let the welcoming hosts spoil you with fresh farmhouse bread, homemade bacon and cheese, airy doughnuts or hearty dumplings.

Where entertainment and long-distance hiking meet

Wagraini's Grafenberg

On your family hiking holiday, you should make sure not to miss Wagrainis Grafenberg – hiking with children could hardly be more fun and entertaining. Even the ascent on the Grafenbergbahn cable car will make your children's eyes shine with excitement. And once you're at the top, the gondola will open to a world of adventure. The activities on offer include rafting across the lake, as well as the fast-paced Hachau slide. Along the easy hiking trail, which can also be comfortably managed by pram, you will find other attractions including a stone pendulum, a water playground, a boulder wall, a rope garden and many others.

Salzburger Almenweg

For experienced hikers, the Salzburger Almenweg will be especially interesting. Divided into 31 sections, this 350-kilometre trail leads through the most beautiful hiking areas of the Salzburg region. Needless to say, Wagrain-Kleinarl is one of them.
The individual sections are between 5 and 17 kilometres long and can be hiked separately or as a whole.
More than 120 alpine lodges line the trail and provide for the necessary refreshment during your hiking tour.

Lake Jägersee

Jägersee

A mountain lake could hardly be more picturesque than Lake Jägersee, whose emerald green waters greet hikers at the end of the Kleinarl valley. Take the hiking shuttle to Kleinarl and walk the well-laid out path along the Kleinarler Ache stream, which can also easily be managed by pram and will take you to lake Jägersee in about 1 hour.

You can also drive directly to the lake and take a leisurely walk around it (this path is also suitable for prams). We recommend that you stop at the Gasthaus Jägersee for refreshments.

Lake Tappenkarsee

Tappenkarsee

If you are on a hiking holiday in Wagrain-Kleinarl, you should definitely not miss out on a hike to Lake Tappenkarsee. The hiking trail leads past Lake Jägersee before reaching Lake Tappenkarsee, after covering a difference in altitude of 750 metres. Once you reach the top, you will get to enjoy breath-taking views of the largest mountain lake in the Eastern Alps, which is nestled against the surrounding rock faces. Before you return, stop at one of the two local lodges for some hearty refreshments. And you may even catch a glimpse of the dragon that is said to live in the lake.

Lake Rupertisee

Rupertisee

This artificial reservoir is just as beautiful as the natural lakes of the Salzburger Sportwelt. The "Flying Mozart" cable car will take you to the start of the hiking trail to Lake Rupertisee, which is based on the motto "The mountain is alive" and takes about 45 minutes. Numerous information boards provide details about the region, how the surrounded mountains formed, and many other topics. During the hike, you will also be able to enjoy panoramic views of the impressive Radstädter and Hohe Tauern mountains. You can either return along the same path or continue down into the valley to the middle station of the gondola lift.

Hiking holidays in Wagrain

Are you already mentally exploring the mountains surrounding Wagrain?
Here are a few additional tips:

First of all, you should always be well prepared for your hike. This includes a small snack (such as fruit, muesli bars or sandwiches) and plenty of water, as well as comfortable hiking boots. We therefore recommend a brief detour to the nearest supermarket. In the mountains, even the sunniest weather can quickly turn, which is why you should never go on a hike without appropriate clothing. You should thus always pack a rain jacket and a hat, as well as sun cream and plasters (which are available from the pharmacy in the town centre). And, of course, you should also make sure that your mobile phone is charged (call 140 for the Mountain Rescue Service).

But first of all, you need to book your hiking holiday in the Salzburger Land – we will be happy to prepare a personalised offer for you. Simply enquire now by email or book online, quickly and conveniently.
