Hohenwerfen Castle in the Salzburger Land

Attractions & sights in the Salzburg region

Fascinating attractions to discover

Hardly any other region in Austria has as many fascinating attractions and sights to offer as the Salzburger Land. This includes unique highlights such as the world's largest ice cave (in Werfen), Europe's largest waterfall (in Krimml) and Austria's highest mountain (the Großglockner).
And the best thing about it: Due to the central location of Appartments Schattauer and the nearby motorway, all excursion destinations are easy to reach.

Salzburg city

Salzburg

A walk through the historic Getreidegasse (Salzburg’s high street) will take you back in time. Horses' hooves clatter on the pavement, historical buildings line the way and the sound of cathedral bells fills the air. Since there is so much to see and discover, many people get a sudden urge to stop the passage of time. Here are just a few of the most famous sights: Mozart's birthplace (Getreidegasse), Mozart's former home, the cathedral precinct with the bishop's palace, the Hohensalzburg Fortress, and Mirabell Palace with is beautiful gardens. The numerous museums are also worth a visit, for instance the Museum der Moderne (a museum of modern art) at the top of the Mönchsberg hill, or the open-air museum in Großgmain, which is especially popular with families.

Hellbrunn Palace & zoo

Hellbrunn & zoo

One might think that Hellbrunn Palace, set in extensive grounds and more than 400 years old, is the main attraction, but actually, the palace is famous for its fountains, which are unlike any other in the world. Let yourself be enchanted by the water-powered sculptures and other sights on offer. And Salzburg Zoo, which is located right next door, is just as popular. From native chamois goats to exotic lions, the zoo's 14 hectares are home to around 1,200 animals from around the world. The petting zoo featuring mini pigs, sheep, rabbits and many other animals is particularly popular with children.

Haus der Natur

Haus d. Natur

From prehistoric dinosaurs to space travel – the Haus der Natur has it all. No wonder that time flies by during your visit. Watch, try and marvel – this museum features colourful underwater worlds full of corals and exotic fish, an eye-opening journey through the human body and many other exhibitions that convey knowledge about nature in an exciting manner.

The Science Center is especially popular, where knowledge becomes tangible in the true sense of the word. This museum offers a fascinating experience for visitors of any age, making it the perfect bad weather option for the whole family.

Hohenwerfen Castle

Another worthwhile destination is located only about 40 minutes from Wagrain: Hohenwerfen Castle. This more than 900-year-old fortress dominates the Salzach valley, and together with the Hohensalzburg Fortress, it is one of the most beautiful landmarks in the Salzburg region. Take a guided tour to gain insights into the fascinating history of the region, before enjoying the falconry show at the historic Landesfalkenhof, which is sure to impress visitors both young and old alike.
Needless to say, food and drink are also available. In the historic ambience of the Burgschenke restaurant you will dine like medieval knights, and coffee and cake taste even better in the sunny castle garden.

Eisriesenwelt Werfen

Ice cave

During your stay in Wagrain, you should definitely make time to visit the world's largest ice cave. A cable car will take you up from the visitor centre in Werfen. At the cave entrance, you will be welcomed by your guide, who will accompany you into the depths of the mountain.
Good to know: Be sure to dress warmly! Even in summer the temperature inside the cave is below zero. If you get cold easily, you should also remember to bring gloves and a hat. Sturdy shoes are absolutely essential! The cave is generally suitable for older children (the guided tour takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes, with a difference in altitude of 134 metres, and cannot be cut short), but prams cannot be brought into the cave.

Liechtensteinklamm

Gorge

This mystical gorge is located in St Johann, only 15 km away. Even from afar you can hear the roaring of the mighty waterfall as it plunges down a steep cliff. The walkway follows the course of the creek and leads deeper and deeper into the gorge, which becomes ever narrower, so that the rocks above almost seem to be touching each other. But then a ray of sunshine hits the spray of water and is refracted into a thousand colours. Let yourself be enchanted by this impressive natural spectacle. The Liechtensteinklamm is a destination for the whole family, but a visit with a pram is not recommended (due to the narrow paths and stairs).

Krimml waterfalls

Krimml

The Krimml waterfalls attract hundreds of thousands of visitors every year – and rightly so. With a drop of 380 meters, they are the largest waterfalls in Europe and among the most impressive in the world!

The journey from Wagrain takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes, but it's definitely worth it! The falls, which plunge towards the valley in three stages, are truly a natural wonder. They can best be admired from the wide waterfall path (fees apply) with numerous viewpoints, which takes about 1 hour and 15 minutes to complete and is suitable even for children.
