A glorious winter landscape in Wagrain in the Salzburger Land, Austria

Winter holidays in Wagrain

Lots of fun in the snow

Many of the winter activities on offer in Wagrain and the surrounding area take place on the slopes. But that's not all – because even away from the slopes Wagrain has a lot to offer. This includes classic winter sports such as cross-country skiing, tobogganing or winter hiking, but during your winter holidays in Wagrain you can also try out more recent trends such as snowbiking.

Cross-country skiing

Cross-country skiing

Due to its climate and location, snow is almost guaranteed in the Wagrain-Kleinarl region, making it a paradise also for cross-country skiers, with more than 23 km of trails. Classic cross-country runs as well as skating trails of easy and medium difficulty offer unadulterated cross-country fun. Especially worth mentioning are the Jägerseeloipe in Kleinarl and the Tauernloipe trails.
And if that's not enough for you, the Salzburger Sportwelt offers an additional 240 kilometres of cross-country trails.

Backcountry ski tours

Ski tours

Through glittering snow and an untouched winter landscape you walk smoothly upwards. A breathtaking mountain panorama and a strengthening snack are waiting for you. And finally a downhill through powder snow or on groomed slopes back to the valley.  Backcountry tracks at the secured slope are offered at the Rote 8er, at the Grafenberg and at the Gernkogel. For those who prefer the free area a ski tour to the Kleinarler Hütte or to the Penkkopf are recommended.
Here you can find some tour suggestions.

Tobogganing

Tobogganing

When was the last time you went tobogganing? If you didn't go tobogganing last season, we recommend that you don’t miss out on this fun winter activity during your next winter holiday in Wagrain!
For example, there are toboggan runs at the Jausenstation Ennskraxn (2.5 km, illuminated in the evening) or at the Kleinarl lodge (6.5 km, natural toboggan run). Toboggans can be rented on site.

Snow show hiking

Snow show hiking

A snow shoe hike is probably the most beautiful alternative option to skiing. This will take you through snow-covered winter landscapes, where the only sounds you can hear are your own breath and the crunching of snow underfoot.
On a guided snow shoe hike, the experienced guides from team-works or the Kleinarl ski school will show you the most beautiful spots in the Wagrain-Kleinarl region.

Snowbiking

Technically, snowbiking is not an activity away from the slopes, but it is definitely an alternative to skiing.
And it's just as much fun! Following a two-hour training, you will be able to take the first turns before setting off to explore the slopes of Wagrain-Kleinarl. Snowbike courses are offered by Intersport Wagrain at the "Rote 8er" gondola life and by Sport Hauser in Kleinarl. Both places also offer snowbikes for rent.

Ice skating

Skating

Every year, an ice rink is set up at the valley station of the Flying Mozart cable car. This is where the young and the young-at-heart, locals and guests alike meet for some ice-skating fun – put your skates, do your turns and enjoy the feeling of gliding across the ice.
Ice skates for children and adults are available for rent on site. The ice rink is open daily from 2 p.m., with floodlights in the evening.

Ice stock sport

Ice stock sport

Have you ever tried ice stock sport? This traditional sport, which is related to curling, is a must at any Salzburg winter sports resort! The aim is to get as close as possible to the "Haserl" with the ice stick, which requires quite a bit of skill. But above all, ice stock sport is about having fun in good company.
There are ice stock sport rinks in Wagrain as well as in Kleinarl, and we are happy to help you make a reservation.

Horse-drawn sleighs

Horse-drawn sleighs

The landscape all around is covered in thick snow and the only noise that can be heard is the snorting of the horses as they pull the sleigh along, occasionally accompanied by hearty laughs, as the coachman regales you with his funny stories. Wrapped in warm blankets, you will glide through a winter wonderland. Of course, there is also the obligatory pit stop at a lodge, where you can warm up with tea or punch. We are happy to help you make a reservation – please contact the hotel reception for details.
